For Interpreters Working in Medical Settings

The goal of this site is to provide a comprehensive resource for developing competence when working in medical settings. Below are brief descriptions of what is included in each category. It will be a work in progress as resources are identified and added. If you have ideas about resources worth including, please e-mail the webmaster.

Professional Development

This section includes strategies for professional development and to earn CEUs through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf's CMP/ACET Program. Included are independent study packets and workshops. Many of the study packets make use of the video resources described in the next section. This includes professional development for both Deaf and hearing interpreters.

Video and Audio Resources

This section includes CD-ROMs, DVDs, and VHS tapes, as well as audio resources that interpreters have identified as useful resources in skill development for medical settings. To the extent possible, sample video (or audio) clips are included to give a more complete understanding of the resource. This listing of resources will take time to build.

Useful Links

This section includes an annotated list of web sites that have proven to be useful to interpreters working in medical settings. Some are focused on ASL-English interpreters, some focuses on medical information, but all have been identified as useful by interpreters who work in health care settings.

Dialogue and Commentary

This section includes perspectives shared by experienced medical interpreters on a variety of topics. We will also try to include perspectives of patients and providers who work with interpreters in health care settings. We plan to include both written and video commentaries.

Minnesota Resources

Because this web site is funded in part by the Minnesota Department of Human Services - Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Division, there are specific resourcs identified for Minnesota interpreters. As resources allow, we may identify other state-specific resources.
